Best Time to Visit Yemen
The ideal time to visit Yemen is from October to April. During these months, the weather in the Hadhramaut Valley and Sana'a is pleasantly cool and dry. For Socotra, this period avoids the monsoon winds (June-September) which make the island virtually inaccessible and many activities impossible. Winter months are perfect for trekking and outdoor exploration across the entire country.
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Yemeni Rial (YER). However, Yemen currently operates with a dual exchange rate system between the north and south. US Dollars (printed after 2013) are widely accepted and often preferred for large transactions. Credit cards are almost never accepted except in a few high-end hotels in Aden; cash is king. Tipping is expected for all services, usually around 10-15% for guides and security personnel.
Getting Around Yemen
Intercity travel in Yemen requires careful planning. Domestic flights via Yemenia or Felix Airways are the safest and most efficient way to travel between Sana'a, Seiyun, Mukalla, and Aden. For ground transport, private armored 4x4 vehicles with professional drivers and a security detail are mandatory for foreign travelers. There are no passenger trains in Yemen, and public buses are not recommended for luxury travelers due to security checkpoints and lengthy delays.
