Best Time to Visit Turkmenistan
The best time to visit Turkmenistan with a family is during the Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm rather than scorching, making desert excursions and city walks much more comfortable for children. Summer temperatures can easily exceed 40°C (104°F), which can be quite taxing for young travelers.
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Turkmen Manat (TMT). Turkmenistan is primarily a cash-based economy. While some high-end hotels in Ashgabat and Avaza may accept credit cards, you should carry enough US Dollars to exchange for Manat at banks or official exchange offices. Tipping is not strictly required but is appreciated in restaurants and for private guides (around 5-10%).
Getting Around Turkmenistan
For intercity travel, domestic flights with Turkmenistan Airlines are the fastest and most comfortable option, especially when traveling with kids. The train system is also a great, slower-paced alternative for the Ashgabat to Mary route. Within cities, private cars or pre-arranged tour transport are the most reliable methods, as public buses can be crowded and difficult to navigate without local language skills.
