The Itinerary
Day 1: Turkmenbashi - Coastal Arrivals and City Heritage
Turkmenbashi Museum of Regional History
Start your journey by learning about the Caspian region's flora, fauna, and local history. The museum is small but well-organized, with dioramas that capture the interest of children.
Harbour-Side Lunch
Enjoy a relaxed family lunch near the port area. Many local restaurants serve fresh-caught sturgeon or carp, which is a regional specialty and usually very kid-friendly when grilled.
Historic Railway Station
Visit the beautiful, Tsar-era railway station. Its intricate architecture is a great backdrop for family photos, and the wide station platform is easy to navigate with a stroller.
Turkmenbashi Lighthouse
Walk towards the historic lighthouse area for a sunset view. The paths here are paved and provide a gentle introduction to the city's maritime atmosphere.
Day 2: Turkmenbashi - Shoreline Views and Local Flavor
Japanese War Cemetery
Located on the outskirts, this is a quiet, well-maintained historical site. It offers a serene environment for a morning walk and a lesson in 20th-century history.
Central Market (Bazar)
Experience the local hustle and bustle at the bazaar. It is a great place to pick up fresh fruits, nuts, and snacks for the kids. The aisles are relatively wide for a market.
Seaport Promenade
Take a walk along the modern seaport area. The pavement is smooth and flat, making it the best spot in the city for a long, uninterrupted stroller walk while watching the ships.
Local Tea House Experience
Relax at a local 'Chaikhana.' Sit on a traditional raised platform and enjoy some green tea and local breads while the kids enjoy the open-air seating.
Day 3: Turkmenbashi - The Magic of Awaza
Jadyly Kenar (Magic Shore) Park
Head to the Awaza district for a day of fun. This theme park features rides and attractions suitable for various ages, set right against the backdrop of the Caspian Sea.
Awaza Canal Boat Ride
Take a family boat trip down the 7-kilometer artificial canal that winds through the resort zone. It is a relaxing way to see the futuristic architecture without a lot of walking.
Awaza Beach Play
Spend the afternoon on one of the public sandy beaches. The waters of the Caspian are relatively shallow and calm, which is ideal for children to splash around safely.
Yacht Club Dinner
Dine at one of the upscale yacht club restaurants. They offer high chairs and international menus that cater to pickier eaters while offering great sea views.
Day 4: Turkmenbashi - Modern Marvels and Water Play
Aquapark Exploration

Picnic at Awaza Park
The resort zone features several large, manicured green parks. Grab some supplies from a local shop and enjoy a picnic under the shade of the newly planted trees.
Awaza Convention Center Grounds
The grounds around the major hotels and the convention center are beautifully landscaped with fountains and sculptures that are fun for kids to explore.
Musical Fountains Show
In the evenings, many of the parks in Awaza feature choreographed musical fountain shows. It is a magical experience for children and a great way to end the day.
Day 5: Turkmenbashi - Final Views and Souvenirs
Coastal Road Drive
Take a scenic drive along the coast back toward the city center. There are several pull-off points where you can take final family photos of the Caspian horizon.
Handicraft Shopping
Visit a local workshop or souvenir shop to buy traditional Turkmen wool socks or small felt toys, which make wonderful mementos for children.
Church of St. Michael the Archangel
This historic Russian Orthodox church is a peaceful spot. The small garden surrounding it is a nice place for a quiet moment before your departure.
Farewell Seafood Dinner
Conclude your trip with a final meal at a restaurant overlooking the harbor, celebrating your family's discovery of Turkmenistan's coastal gem.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Turkmenbashi is from late May to September. During this period, the Caspian Sea is warm enough for swimming, and the sea breeze makes the coastal heat much more tolerable than the inland deserts. However, if you prefer cooler temperatures for walking, early autumn (September and October) offers pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Turkmenistani Manat (TMT). Cash is king in Turkmenbashi; while major hotels in Awaza may accept credit cards, local markets and smaller restaurants will require cash. It is highly recommended to exchange money in official banks or use ATMs located in the larger hotels. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up the bill is appreciated in nicer restaurants.
Getting Around
For families, the most convenient way to get around is by taxi. Official and unofficial taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap. Within the Awaza district, there are shuttle buses that connect the major hotels and parks. If you are traveling between the city center and the resort zone, arranging a private car through your hotel is the most comfortable and stroller-friendly option.
