Best Time to Visit Timor Leste
The best time to visit Timor Leste is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During these months, the weather is sunny and stable, and the roads are most reliable for travel into the mountains and coastal regions. This is also the best time for snorkeling and diving as water visibility is at its peak. If you prefer lush green landscapes, the shoulder months of May and June are particularly beautiful.
Currency & Money
Timor Leste uses the United States Dollar (USD) as its official currency. While there are some local centavo coins for small change, all paper bills are USD. Cash is king here; while major hotels and some restaurants in Dili accept credit cards, you will need physical cash for almost everything else, especially in Atauro, Maubisse, and Baucau. ATMs are available in Dili and Baucau but can be unreliable, so it is best to carry sufficient cash from the start.
Getting Around Timor Leste
Intercity travel in Timor Leste is best done via private 4WD vehicle rentals or chartered taxis, especially for families seeking comfort and flexibility. Public 'Mikrolets' (minibuses) are common and very cheap within Dili, but they are often crowded and not suitable for long journeys with kids and strollers. For reaching Atauro Island, there are regular ferry services including the government-run Berlin Nakroma and private fast boats. There are currently no passenger trains in the country.
