Best Time to Visit Tajikistan
For families, the best time to visit is from late May to early June or throughout September and October. During these months, the weather in the cities (Dushanbe, Khujand) is pleasantly warm (20-28°C), and the mountain passes are clear of snow. July and August can be extremely hot in the lowlands, often exceeding 40°C, which can be difficult for young children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Tajik Somoni (TJS). While Dushanbe and Khujand have ATMs that accept Visa and Mastercard, they can sometimes run out of cash or have low withdrawal limits. It is essential to carry US Dollars or Euros in cash (crisp, new bills) to exchange at banks. Tipping is generally not expected in local cafes but a 10% service charge is often added to the bill in upscale city restaurants.
Getting Around Tajikistan
For a 16-day family trip, private 4x4 vehicles with professional drivers are the most comfortable and reliable way to travel between cities. There are no passenger trains connecting Dushanbe to the north (Khujand). Domestic flights exist between Dushanbe and Khujand via Somon Air, taking about 45 minutes, which is a great time-saver if you want to avoid the long mountain drive. Within cities, 'marshrutkas' (minibuses) are common, but taxis are very affordable and much easier with strollers and luggage.
