Best Time to Visit Tajikistan
The best time for a family trip to Tajikistan is during the late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm rather than scorching, and the mountain passes are clear of snow. Summer (July and August) can be very hot in cities like Dushanbe and Khujand, though it is the best time for high-altitude trekking if you plan to venture further into the Pamirs.
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Somoni (TJS). Tajikistan is primarily a cash-based economy. While some hotels and upscale restaurants in Dushanbe and Khujand accept credit cards (Visa is more common than Mastercard), you will need cash for bazaars, guesthouses, and rural areas. ATMs are widely available in major cities but can be unreliable or run out of cash, so it is wise to carry USD or Euro as a backup for exchange.
Getting Around Tajikistan
For families, the most comfortable way to get around is by hiring a private car and driver. This allows for flexible stops and a much more relaxed pace than shared taxis, which are the standard public transport between cities. There are no passenger trains connecting the north and south. Within Dushanbe, the local trolleybuses and 'marshrutkas' are cheap, but taxis (ordered via apps like Yakdu or Rakhsh) are much more convenient for travelers with children.
