Taitung is the ultimate destination for families seeking a break from the frantic pace of city life. As part of our Family Travel Guides series, this itinerary focuses on the slow-travel philosophy, ensuring you experience the "Epic Journey" of Taiwan’s rugged east coast without the stress of overpacked schedules. With its wide-open spaces and fresh Pacific air, Taitung is incredibly welcoming for those traveling with toddlers or young children.
This 3-day guide prioritizes ease of movement, selecting spots that are largely stroller-accessible and close to one another. Whether you're cycling through golden rice paddies or watching paragliders soar over emerald hills, you'll find that Taitung offers a unique blend of indigenous culture and natural beauty that feels both adventurous and manageable for parents.
Day 1: Taitung City - Parks and Lanterns
Taitung Forest Park
Known as the 'Black Forest,' this park features easy, flat paths perfect for strollers or renting a family-sized bicycle. Visit the Pipa Lake for stunning crystal-clear water views.
Taitung Seashore Park
Adjacent to the forest park, this seaside area features the 'International Landmark'—a giant rattan globe. It’s a great spot for kids to run around while parents enjoy the Pacific breeze.
Tiehua Music Village
A charming cultural hub where hundreds of hand-painted hot air balloon lanterns light up at dusk. It’s a magical, safe environment for children to explore local crafts and music.
Taitung Night Market
Located on Zhengqi Road, this market is manageable and features kid favorites like sweet potato balls and grilled corn. The atmosphere is lively but generally less crowded than Taipei markets.
Day 2: Luye and Prehistory - Nature and Discovery
National Museum of Prehistory
This world-class museum is fully air-conditioned and stroller-friendly. The interactive exhibits on Taiwan’s indigenous history and ice-age animals are a hit with curious kids.
Beinan Cultural Park
Located right behind the museum, this park offers vast grassy lawns where families can enjoy a picnic among ancient archaeological stone pillars.
Luye Plateau
A short drive from the city center, this plateau offers breathtaking views of the Rift Valley. Kids love watching the paragliders land, and there’s plenty of space for them to roll down the hills.
Dinner in Luye Village
Enjoy a traditional tea-inspired meal in Luye, famous for its Oolong tea. Many restaurants here are spacious and accustomed to hosting multi-generational families.
Day 3: Chishang - The Golden Rice Paddies
Mr. Brown Avenue (Chishang)
Take a scenic train ride or drive to Chishang. Rent an electric four-wheel bicycle (with child seats!) to cruise through the iconic rice fields without a single power line in sight.
Dapo Pond
Located at the end of the cycling route, this tranquil wetland is perfect for a slow walk. You can even try a traditional bamboo raft ride if the weather is calm.
Chishang Lunch Box Museum
Housed in a building with vintage train carriages, this museum celebrates the famous Chishang rice. Kids will enjoy eating their 'Bento' inside a real train car.
Return to Taitung City
Wrap up your journey with some souvenir shopping for local snacks like custard apples or rice crackers before heading back to your accommodation.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Taitung is from April to June or September to November when the weather is pleasantly warm and rainfall is lower. July and August are beautiful for the Hot Air Balloon Festival but can be extremely hot and prone to typhoons. Winter is mild, making it a decent choice for families avoiding the summer heat.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While major hotels and large department stores accept credit cards, Taitung's night markets, small eateries, and bicycle rentals are strictly cash-only. ATMs are widely available at 7-Eleven and FamilyMart convenience stores.
Getting Around
The most efficient way for families to explore Taitung is by renting a car, as public buses can be infrequent. If you prefer not to drive, the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle (East Coast and Rift Valley lines) stops at major attractions. For Chishang, taking the local train and then renting an electric bicycle is the most convenient and fun option.
