Day 1: Sur, Oman - Maritime Traditions
Al Ayjah Dhow Yard
Witness the living history of Omani craftsmanship at the only remaining dhow-building yard in the country. It is an open-air site, making it easy to navigate with a stroller while kids marvel at the massive wooden ships being built by hand.
Lunch at Al Hawash Restaurant
Located right on the water, this restaurant offers traditional Omani cuisine and international favorites. The outdoor seating area is spacious, providing plenty of room for high chairs and a great view of the harbor.
Al Ayjah Watchtower & Lighthouse
A short drive across the bridge leads to the Al Ayjah district. The lighthouse is a stunning photo spot, and the surrounding area features paved paths perfect for a relaxed family stroll overlooking the turquoise lagoon.
Sur Corniche Walk
Join local families for an evening walk along the Corniche. There are designated playground areas for the children to burn off energy while you enjoy the sunset views and the cooling sea air.
Day 2: Sur, Oman - Fortresses and Wildlife
Sunaysilah Castle
This 300-year-old castle sits on a hill overlooking the city. While there are some steps, the courtyard is wide and accessible, offering a great space for kids to explore the various rooms and old cannons.
Bilad Sur Castle
Located slightly inland, this beautifully restored fortress features a traditional architecture museum. It is often quieter than other sites, allowing for a peaceful family exploration of Omani heritage.
Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve
Take a scenic 45-minute drive to this world-famous sanctuary. While the main turtle viewing happens at night, the visitor center is highly educational for kids during the late afternoon. It is the most popular day trip from Sur.
Turtle Watching Tour
Experience the magic of seeing Green Turtles nesting on the beach. The reserve offers guided tours that are safe and organized for families, creating a lifelong memory for children of all ages.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Sur is between October and March when the weather is pleasantly warm, ranging from 20°C to 28°C. This period is ideal for outdoor activities and walking the Corniche. Summers (May to September) can be extremely hot and humid, making outdoor exploration difficult with small children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Omani Rial (OMR). While major hotels and larger restaurants in Sur accept credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), it is essential to carry cash for smaller cafes, local markets, and entry fees to some historic sites. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; 10% is generous for good service.
Getting Around
The most efficient way to navigate Sur with a family is by renting a car. The roads are excellent and well-signposted. While there are local taxis available, having your own vehicle provides the flexibility needed for stroller storage and the trip to Ras Al Jinz. Parking is generally free and easy to find throughout the city.
