Day 1: Split, Croatia - Ancient Hearts and Harbor Views
Diocletian's Palace Exploration
Start your journey in the heart of the city. The palace is largely pedestrian-only and stroller-friendly. Focus on the Peristyle square where kids can see 'real life' Roman soldiers. Visit the basement halls for a cool, shaded walk that feels like an underground adventure.
Lunch at the Riva Promenade
Walk a few steps to the Riva, Split's iconic waterfront. It is wide, flat, and perfect for strollers. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating with high chairs and views of the ferries coming and going, which provides great entertainment for toddlers.
Gregory of Nin Statue
Head to the Golden Gate to see the massive statue of Gregory of Nin. It’s a local tradition to rub his big golden toe for good luck—a hit with children of all ages. The nearby park provides a green space for a quick run-around.
Dinner in Varoš District

Day 2: Split, Croatia - Green Peaks and Pebble Beaches
Marjan Hill Forest Park
Take the gentle climb or the bus to Marjan Hill. The park is the 'lungs of the city' and features paved paths through pine forests. There is a fantastic playground near the first viewpoint and a small, well-maintained zoo area that is perfect for young explorers.
Picnic at Prva Vidilica
Enjoy a picnic at the first viewpoint (Vidilica). There is a cafe here for snacks, and the area is fenced off, allowing kids to move safely while you enjoy the panoramic view of Split’s harbor and the mountains beyond.
Kašjuni Beach Relaxation
Head down to the western side of the Marjan peninsula to Kašjuni Beach. This pebble beach is sheltered, meaning the water is calm and clear. It’s a great spot for kids to search for sea glass and shells while you soak in the Mediterranean sun.
Gelato at Pumparela
Return to the city center for a nightly ritual: gelato. This popular spot offers a variety of artisanal flavors that children love, and it’s located right by the water for a pleasant evening stroll.
Day 3: Split, Croatia - Sandy Shores and Secret Gardens
Bačvice Beach Play
Unlike most of Croatia, Bačvice is a sandy beach with very shallow water extending quite far out. It is the safest place for toddlers to splash. You can watch locals play 'Picigin', a traditional ball game played in the shallows.
Lunch at Firule Bay
Walk along the coastal path to Firule Bay. There are several family-oriented pizzerias and seafood spots here that are much more spacious than the cramped restaurants in the Old Town.
Split City Museum
Located inside the palace, this museum offers a manageable look at local history. The courtyard is beautiful and provides a quiet escape from the afternoon sun. The exhibits are visual enough to keep older kids engaged for an hour.
Evening Walk at Sustipan Park
End your day at Sustipan, an old cemetery turned public park. It sits on a cliff overlooking the sea and is a popular spot for local families to watch the sunset while children play on the soft grass.
Day 4: Split, Croatia - Coastal Voyages
Bura Line Boat to Trogir
Instead of a bus, take the Bura Line ferry from the Split harbor to the UNESCO town of Trogir. The boat ride itself is an adventure for children, and the ferry accommodates strollers easily. The journey takes about an hour.
Exploring Trogir Old Town
Trogir is tiny, flat, and incredibly easy to navigate with a family. Walk through the narrow stone streets and visit the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. The main square is a safe place for kids to roam while you admire the architecture.
Kamerlengo Castle
This fortress at the edge of Trogir is exciting for kids who love 'castle' stories. The wide courtyard inside is safe for running, and older children will enjoy the view from the ramparts (keep a close eye on them here!).
Trogir Waterfront Dinner
Enjoy a final meal on the Trogir waterfront before catching the late boat back to Split. The promenade here is lined with palm trees and has a very relaxed, vacation vibe.
Day 5: Split, Croatia - Art, Sculpture, and Sunsets
Ivan Meštrović Gallery
This gallery is dedicated to Croatia's greatest sculptor. The building itself is stunning, and the large outdoor sculpture garden is a fantastic place for children to explore art in an open-air, non-stuffy environment.
Lunch at Fife
Head back toward the Riva to Fife, a legendary Split institution. It’s noisy, casual, and fast—perfect for families. They serve massive portions of Dalmatian comfort food like beef stew (Pašticada) that kids often enjoy.
West Coast Walk
Walk along the 'Zapadna Obala' (West Coast). This is the newest part of the Split promenade, featuring wide, smooth paths and 'walk of fame' plaques for Split’s Olympic athletes. It’s the best place in the city for a final stroller walk.
Farewell Dinner at Adriatic Grašo
Celebrate your final night at this restaurant located on the cliffs of Sustipan. It offers some of the best views in the city and has plenty of space for families to enjoy a higher-end meal in a welcoming atmosphere.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Split with a family is during the shoulder seasons: May to June or September to early October. During these months, the weather is warm enough for swimming (22°C - 26°C), but you avoid the intense heat and the massive cruise ship crowds of July and August. Winters are mild but can be rainy, and many tourist-oriented boat lines stop running.
Currency & Money
Croatia uses the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and supermarkets. However, for small bakeries (pekara), ice cream stands, and some local konobas, carrying cash is essential. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; rounding up the bill or leaving 10% for good service is standard practice.
Getting Around
Split's historic center is entirely pedestrian, making it very safe for children. For points further out like Marjan Hill or the Meštrović Gallery, the local 'Promet' bus system is reliable. Use the Bura Line ferry for coastal trips to nearby Trogir. If you have a stroller, the Riva and the West Coast are perfectly paved, but be prepared for some cobblestones inside the Palace walls.
