Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Puerto Varas is during the Chilean summer (December to March) when temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C. This period offers the clearest views of the volcanoes and the most reliable weather for outdoor activities. However, even in summer, a light rain jacket is recommended as the Lake District is known for sudden, brief showers.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Chilean Peso (CLP). While many restaurants and larger shops in Puerto Varas accept major credit cards, it is essential to carry some cash for smaller craft markets and local buses. Tipping (propina) is customary in restaurants, usually around 10% of the bill, and is often added automatically as a suggestion.
Getting Around
Puerto Varas is a compact city, and the downtown area is easily navigable on foot or with a stroller. For day trips to Frutillar or Petrohué, renting a car is the most convenient option for families. Alternatively, local 'micros' (small buses) run frequently between towns and are very affordable, though they can be cramped during peak hours.
