Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Murghab is from late June to mid-September. During these summer months, the mountain passes are clear of snow, and daytime temperatures are pleasant (15°C to 20°C). However, even in summer, nights can drop below freezing. Winter is extremely harsh, with temperatures often plunging to -40°C, making most luxury travel services unavailable.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Tajikistani Somoni (TJS). Murghab is very isolated; while there is a bank, ATMs are notoriously unreliable and often out of cash. It is essential to bring enough cash for your entire stay. In luxury contexts, USD and EUR are often accepted for large payments like private tours, but local Somoni is needed for small purchases. Tipping (approx. 10%) for private drivers and guides is highly appreciated.
Getting Around
In Murghab, the only realistic way to get around comfortably is via private 4x4 vehicles, typically Toyota Land Cruisers. The terrain is rugged and unpaved. For movement within the small town center, walking is easy, but for any valley exploration, a hired vehicle with a professional driver is required. There are no ride-sharing apps or standard taxi services; all transport should be pre-arranged through your lodge or a tour operator.
