Best Time to Visit Maldives
The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season (the northeast monsoon) from November to April. During these months, you can expect clear blue skies, minimal rain, and the best underwater visibility for diving and snorkeling. If you are specifically looking for Manta Rays in the Baa Atoll, the wet season (May to October) is actually better for sightings at Hanifaru Bay, though rain showers are more frequent.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but in luxury resorts and for most tourist activities, the US Dollar (USD) is the preferred currency. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are widely accepted at all resorts and in Malé. Tipping is a common practice in the Maldives; most resorts include a 10% service charge, but an additional tip for exceptional service from your 'Thakuru' (butler) or villa host is always appreciated.
Getting Around Maldives
Inter-atoll travel in the Maldives is primarily conducted via seaplanes or domestic flights, which are the most efficient ways to cover long distances. Seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. For shorter distances within an atoll, speedboats are the standard mode of transport. In Malé, taxis are available and affordable, though the city is small enough to explore most of the historic sites on foot.
