Day 1: Kasane, Botswana - The Chobe River Gateway
Morning Stroll at Sedudu Gate
Begin your journey at the entrance to Chobe National Park. While deep safari drives can be long for kids, the area around Sedudu Gate often features warthogs and baboons right by the roadside. It is a great way to introduce the little ones to the local fauna without a 4-hour commitment.
Lunch at Chobe Safari Lodge
Head to this historic lodge for a relaxed lunch on their terrace overlooking the river. The grounds are lush, fenced, and safe for children to stretch their legs. The buffet offers a wide variety of kid-friendly options like fresh fruit, pasta, and grilled chicken.
Chobe River Sunset Cruise
This is the highlight of Kasane. Larger pontoon boats are stroller-accessible and very stable. You will likely see hundreds of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles from a safe, comfortable distance. The gentle movement of the boat is perfect for families and provides incredible photo opportunities.
Dinner at The Old House
This charming, family-run restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere with a great garden area. Their wood-fired pizzas are a local favorite and a guaranteed hit with children after a day of spotting wildlife.
Day 2: Kasane, Botswana - Conservation & Culture
CARACAL Biodiversity Center
Visit this rescue and education center located right in Kasane. It is a fantastic educational experience for children, where they can see rescued birds of prey, snakes, and small mammals up close while learning about Botswana’s environment from local experts.
Picnic at the Kasane Baobab Tree
Check out the historic Baobab tree that once served as a local prison. There is a small park area nearby perfect for a casual picnic. It is a quick but iconic stop that showcases the scale of African flora.
Kasane Central Market
Take a walk through the local market. It is a vibrant, sensory experience where you can find handmade baskets and local fabrics. It is a great place to pick up unique souvenirs while supporting the local community.
Kazungula Bridge Viewpoint
Drive toward the new Kazungula Bridge to see the architectural marvel where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe meet. The sunset over the Zambezi River from this vantage point is spectacular and very easy to access by car.
Day 3: Kasane, Botswana - Gardens & Giant Trees
Mowana Safari Resort Grounds
Spend a relaxed morning exploring the botanical beauty of the Mowana grounds. The resort is built around a massive, ancient Baobab tree and features elevated wooden walkways that are entirely stroller-friendly and offer safe birdwatching for kids.
Lunch at Coffee Buzz
This garden cafe is a local gem. It features a play area for children and serves excellent coffee and healthy wraps. It is the perfect spot for a slow-paced family meal before your next adventure.
Lesoma Memorial & Wildlife Corridor
Take a short drive to the Lesoma Valley area. This is a known wildlife corridor where you can often spot giraffes and zebras from the road. The area is peaceful and offers a different perspective of the landscape compared to the riverfront.
Farewell Dinner at Hunter's Pub
Wrap up your Kasane stay at this friendly local establishment. While it sounds like a bar, it is very family-oriented in the early evening, offering a large deck and a menu featuring the best of Botswana’s beef and local seasonal sides.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Kasane for wildlife viewing is during the dry season from May to October. During these months, animals congregate in massive numbers along the Chobe River. Temperatures are mild during the day but can be quite chilly at night and in the early morning, so pack layers for the kids. The wet season (November to April) is lush and green, great for birdwatching, but some roads can be muddy and the humidity is higher.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). While most major lodges and restaurants in Kasane accept international credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), it is wise to carry some cash for smaller markets and tips. Tipping is customary in Botswana; approximately 10% of the bill in restaurants is standard, and small change is appreciated by safari guides and porters.
Getting Around
Kasane is a relatively small town, and many of the main lodges are located along the single main road. For families, the easiest way to get around is by using 'taxis' (usually white cars with blue number plates) which are affordable and plentiful. Many lodges also offer complimentary shuttle services to the airport and nearby attractions. If you plan on exploring further, renting a car is possible, but for this itinerary, local taxis and lodge transfers are more than sufficient.
