Kaohsiung is a breath of fresh air for families traveling with young children. Unlike the cramped streets of Taipei, this southern port city offers wide, paved boulevards, extensive green spaces, and a modern light rail system that is incredibly easy to navigate with a stroller. This guide follows the Family Travel Guides philosophy: slow down, focus on open spaces, and prioritize experiences that keep both parents and kids smiling.
Over three days, you will explore the city's transformation from an industrial hub to an artistic playground. We have selected spots that balance cultural landmarks with plenty of room for children to run, ensuring your weekend getaway feels like a true vacation rather than a marathon of logistics.
Day 1: Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Art, Railways, and River Views
Pier-2 Art Center
Start your morning at this former warehouse district turned into a massive open-air art gallery. The flat, wide paths are perfect for strollers, and kids will love the giant outdoor sculptures and colorful murals. The unique 'mini-train' ride at the Hamasen Museum of Taiwan Railway is a guaranteed hit for little ones.
KW2 (Kaohsiung Port Warehouse No. 2)
Head to the waterfront for lunch at KW2. This renovated warehouse is air-conditioned and features a variety of family-friendly eateries. Don't miss the famous white carousel just outside, which provides a magical photo opportunity against the backdrop of the harbor.
Hamasen Railway Cultural Park
Adjacent to Pier-2, these former railway tracks have been converted into a massive lawn. It is a local favorite for flying kites and blowing bubbles. It is the perfect spot for kids to burn off energy while you enjoy the sunset over the industrial landscape.
Love River Solar Boat Cruise
End your day with a relaxing boat ride down the Love River. The solar-powered boats are quiet and smooth, making it a peaceful experience for tired children. The riverbanks light up beautifully at night, offering a cool breeze after a sunny day.
Day 2: Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Temples and Wildlife Wonders
Lotus Pond & Dragon and Tiger Pagodas
Visit one of Kaohsiung's most iconic landmarks. Entering the dragon's mouth and exiting the tiger's mouth is said to bring good luck, a concept that fascinates children. The walkway around the lake is flat and accessible, though the interior stairs of the pagodas are narrow.
Shou Shan Zoo
After a quick lunch, head to the recently renovated Shou Shan Zoo. The new elevated walkways provide great views of the animals while being completely stroller-friendly. The zoo features a water play area, so remember to pack a change of clothes for the kids.
Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts Park
Not just for art lovers, the museum's surrounding park is a haven for families. There are specialized 'Children's Museum' areas and shaded trails around a beautiful lake, perfect for a mid-afternoon snack break under the trees.
Ruifeng Night Market
Experience Taiwan's famous night market culture. Ruifeng is preferred by locals and features many carnival-style games (pinball, ring tossing) that keep children entertained while you sample street food like scallion pancakes and papaya milk.
Day 3: Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Island Breezes and Urban Lights
Cijin Island Exploration
Take the short 5-minute ferry from Gushan Pier. Once on the island, rent an electric family bicycle (4-seater) with a canopy. This is the best way to see the Cijin Lighthouse, the Rainbow Arch, and the Wind Turbine Park without exhausting the little ones.
Cijin Seafood Street
Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch on the main strip. Many restaurants have large round tables suitable for families and offer kid-friendly dishes like fried rice and steamed fish. Afterward, let the kids play in the sand at Cijin Beach.
Dome of Light
Head back to the mainland and visit the Formosa Boulevard MRT station. The 'Dome of Light' is the world's largest glass art installation. It is a quick, air-conditioned stop that provides a stunning visual experience for children as the colors change.
Central Park & Urban Spotlight
Conclude your trip at Central Park. The park features a large playground and a lush landscape. It is a great place for a final relaxed stroll before heading to the airport or train station, conveniently located right on the Red Line MRT.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Kaohsiung is from October to December when the weather is pleasantly warm and dry. Unlike northern Taiwan, Kaohsiung enjoys a lot of sunshine. Summers (June to September) can be extremely hot and humid with occasional typhoons, so if you visit then, plan for indoor activities during the midday heat.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While major hotels and department stores accept credit cards, many small eateries and night market stalls are cash-only. Tipping is not expected in Taiwan, but a small service charge is often included in restaurant bills. It is highly recommended to get an EasyCard or iPass for seamless payments on the MRT and buses.
Getting Around
Kaohsiung's MRT (subway) and Light Rail are excellent, clean, and fully stroller-accessible with elevators at every station. The Light Rail is particularly scenic as it circles the harbor area. For destinations not covered by rail, Uber is widely available and affordable for families who prefer door-to-door transport.
