Brunei, often overlooked by backpackers in Southeast Asia, offers a unique blend of opulent Islamic architecture and pristine rainforests. Traveling here on a shoestring is surprisingly achievable if you utilize the local bus system and stick to the incredible street food scenes.
This 3-day itinerary focuses on the 'Abode of Peace' through a budget lens, ensuring you see the grand mosques, explore the largest stilt village in the world, and taste the local flavors of Tutong and Bandar Seri Begawan for roughly $16.80 USD per day.
Day 1: Bandar Seri Begawan - City of Golden Domes
Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque
Start your journey at one of the most beautiful mosques in Asia. It is free to enter (outside prayer times) and features a ceremonial barge sitting in a lagoon. The Italian marble and gold leaf domes are spectacular for photography.
Royal Regalia Museum
Walk to this free museum to see the Sultan's coronation carriage and a massive collection of state gifts. It is air-conditioned, making it the perfect midday escape from the Brunei heat.
Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
Take the purple bus to see Brunei's largest mosque. With 29 golden domes representing the 29th Sultan, the scale of this structure is breathtaking. Entrance is free, but remember to dress modestly.
Kianggeh Market (Pasar Kianggeh)
End your day at this riverside market. You can find local snacks like 'Nasi Katok' (fried chicken and rice with sambal) for as little as $1 BND, keeping your daily food cost exceptionally low.
Day 2: Tutong & Kampong Ayer - Water Villages & River Views
Kampong Ayer Water Taxi Tour
Head to the waterfront and flag down a wooden water taxi. For $1 BND, they will take you across to the stilt village. Explore the boardwalks of the world's largest water settlement on foot for free.
Bus to Tutong District
Catch a public bus from the BSB bus terminal towards Tutong. The journey takes about an hour and costs only a few dollars. It's a great way to see the Bruneian countryside on a budget.
Pantai Seri Kenangan
In Tutong, walk to this beautiful beach where the river runs parallel to the South China Sea. It is a popular spot for locals and completely free to enjoy for a sunset stroll.
Gadong Night Market
Back in BSB, head to the Gadong Night Market. This is the heart of Brunei's budget food scene. Try 'Sate' (grilled meat skewers) and 'Ambuyat' if you're feeling adventurous.
Day 3: Muara - Coastal Breezes & Jungle Trails
Tasek Lama Recreational Park
Located near the city center, this park offers free hiking trails through real jungle and a small waterfall. It’s a great way to see Brunei's flora and fauna without paying for an expensive tour.
Bus to Muara Beach
Take the bus to the northern tip of the country. Muara Beach is a clean, white-sand park with plenty of shade. Pack a picnic from a local 'Kedai Kopi' (coffee shop) to save on lunch costs.
Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum
Located near the archaeological site of Kota Batu, this museum provides insight into Brunei’s history as a trading powerhouse. Entry fees are very minimal for international visitors.
Yayasan SHHB Complex
Walk through the open-air plaza of this shopping complex for a final view of the illuminated Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque across the water. It’s the perfect, free ending to your trip.
Best Time to Visit Brunei
The best time to visit Brunei is during the dry season between February and March, or during the summer months from June to August. Try to avoid the Hari Raya festivities if you want to ensure all shops and public transport are running at full capacity, though the Sultan's palace (Istana Nurul Iman) opens to the public once a year during this time.
Currency & Money
Brunei uses the Brunei Dollar (BND), which is pegged 1:1 with the Singapore Dollar. Both currencies are technically legal tender in both countries. Cash is king for buses and night markets, so keep small denominations handy. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional service.
Getting Around Brunei
Brunei's public bus system, known as the 'Purple Buses', is the most budget-friendly way to travel, with fares starting at $1 BND. For crossing the river in BSB, water taxis are the standard. While there are no trains, the Dart app (Brunei's version of Uber/Grab) is useful if you find yourself stranded after the buses stop running around 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.
