Best Time to Visit Brunei
The best time to visit Brunei is between February and March when the weather is at its driest, making it ideal for exploring the rainforests of Temburong and the walking trails in BSB. However, Brunei is a year-round destination. If you visit during Hari Raya Aidilfitri (the end of Ramadan), the Sultan opens his palace (Istana Nurul Iman) to the public for three days, providing a rare chance to step inside and even enjoy a free buffet!
Currency & Money
Brunei uses the Brunei Dollar (BND), which is pegged 1:1 with the Singapore Dollar. In fact, Singapore Dollars are widely accepted in Brunei, and vice versa. Cash is king for budget travelers, especially at night markets and for the $1 bus fares. While credit cards are accepted in larger shopping malls and hotels, always carry small denominations of BND for your daily backpacking needs. Tipping is not a common practice in Brunei, though rounding up the bill is appreciated.
Getting Around Brunei
Getting around Brunei on a budget is surprisingly easy but requires patience. The capital, BSB, is served by a network of colorful franchise buses that cost a flat rate of $1 BND per journey. For inter-district travel, public buses run between BSB, Tutong, and Kuala Belait. To reach Temburong, the most scenic route is the 45-minute speedboat from the BSB jetty ($7), though the new CCK Bridge now allows for car and bus travel. For short hops across the river, the iconic water taxis are the way to go, costing just $1 per trip.
