Day 1: Bilbao, Spain - Modern Wonders & Riverside Play

10:00 AM

Guggenheim Museum & Jeff Koons' Puppy

Start your morning at the world-famous Guggenheim. While the art inside is spectacular, families often enjoy the exterior just as much. Kids will love 'Puppy,' the massive floral dog sculpture, and the 'Mamá' spider. The surrounding plaza is wide and safe for toddlers to roam.

12:30 PM

Nervión Riverside Walk

Take a gentle stroll along the river towards the city center. The path is completely flat and stroller-accessible, offering great views of the city's bridges and modern architecture. There are several benches along the way for quick snack breaks.

03:00 PM

Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park

Known locally as the 'Duck Park,' this is the perfect spot for kids to blow off steam. It features a large pond with ducks and swans, multiple playgrounds, and a classic carousel. It’s a shaded, peaceful retreat for a relaxed afternoon.

06:30 PM

Zubizuri Bridge & Abando Dinner

Cross the iconic white footbridge designed by Santiago Calatrava. Afterward, head into the Abando district for dinner. Many restaurants here offer 'pintxos' (small snacks) which are perfect for picky eaters who want to try different flavors without committing to a full meal.

💡 Flight Hack: Save on your journey to the Basque Country by booking your flights into Bilbao Airport at least 6 weeks in advance. Vueling Airlines.

Day 2: Bilbao, Spain - Historic Charms & Sky-High Views

10:00 AM

Casco Viejo (Old Town)

Explore the 'Seven Streets' of Bilbao's historic heart. The area is mostly pedestrianized, making it safe for children. Visit Plaza Nueva, a beautiful enclosed square where kids can run safely while parents enjoy a coffee under the arches.

12:30 PM

Itsasmuseum (Maritime Museum)

Located near the Euskalduna Palace, this museum is a hit with kids. The outdoor docks feature various ships and the famous red Carola crane. Inside, interactive exhibits tell the story of Bilbao’s seafaring past in an engaging way.

03:30 PM

Artxanda Funicular

Take a short walk to the funicular base and ride the vintage cable railway to the top of Mount Artxanda. The 3-minute ride is a thrill for kids, and the summit offers the best panoramic views of Bilbao, along with a small park and plenty of space to run.

06:30 PM

La Ribera Market

End your trip at one of Europe's largest covered markets. The ground floor has been converted into a vibrant food hall with various stalls. It's an easy, casual spot for a family dinner where everyone can choose exactly what they want to eat.

💡 Where to Stay: For a family-friendly stay with spacious rooms and easy stroller access to the river, check out the NH Collection Villa de Bilbao.

Best Time & Weather

The best time to visit Bilbao is during the late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant for walking, avoiding the humid heat of mid-summer and the frequent rains of winter. Even in summer, Bilbao rarely gets uncomfortably hot, making it a great alternative to the scorching south of Spain.

Currency & Money

The local currency is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafes and the funicular. However, it is always useful to carry a small amount of cash for tiny purchases at traditional bakeries or for tipping. Tipping is not mandatory in Bilbao, but rounding up the bill or leaving a few euros for excellent service is always appreciated.

Getting Around

Bilbao is a highly walkable city, especially the riverfront and the Old Town. For longer distances, the Bilbao Tram (Euskotren Tranbia) is excellent for families as it is low-floor and easy to board with a stroller. The Metro Bilbao, designed by Norman Foster, is also very efficient and clean. Consider purchasing a Barik card, which is a rechargeable transport card that can be used by the whole family on all public transport.
