Best Time to Visit Asia
October is arguably the best month to visit Northern East Asia (Japan and South Korea). The humidity of summer has subsided, and the heavy monsoon rains of late summer have ended. You will experience daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C (59°F - 72°F), which is ideal for walking. The autumn foliage (Koyo in Japan, Danpung in Korea) typically peaks in the northern regions and higher elevations in early October, moving south to cities like Kyoto and Busan by late October.
Visas & Border Crossings
For most Western passport holders (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, EU), both Japan and South Korea offer visa-free entry for tourism for up to 90 days. Always ensure you have a valid K-ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for South Korea, which must be applied for online at least 72 hours before arrival. When crossing from Japan to Korea via ferry, you will clear Japanese immigration at the Hakata terminal and Korean immigration upon arrival in Busan. This process is generally very efficient and takes significantly less time than airport security.
Getting Around Asia
The transit infrastructure in Japan and South Korea is world-leading. In Japan, the Shinkansen (bullet train) is the backbone of travel, and the Japan Rail Pass remains a valuable tool for long-distance routes. In South Korea, the KTX trains are similarly fast and efficient. For the coastal segment between Fukuoka and Busan, the hydrofoil ferry is a unique and scenic alternative to flying. Within cities, both countries use rechargeable IC cards (like Suica or T-Money) that work across almost all subways, buses, and even in convenience stores.
