Best Time to Visit North Korea
The best time to visit North Korea is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). Spring brings cherry blossoms and mild temperatures, perfect for walking tours in Pyongyang. Autumn offers spectacular fall foliage, especially in the mountains of Mt. Myohyang and Mt. Kumgang. July and August can be very hot and rainy, while winter is extremely cold, though it is the prime time for the Masikryong Ski Resort.
Currency & Money
Visitors cannot use the local North Korean Won (KPW). Instead, you must bring cash in Euros (EUR), Chinese Yuan (CNY), or US Dollars (USD). Euros are generally the most widely accepted and preferred. There are no ATMs for foreign cards, and credit cards are not accepted anywhere in the country. Tipping your guides and driver is expected; a gift (like high-end cigarettes or cosmetics) along with a cash tip at the end of the tour is a standard gesture of appreciation.
Getting Around North Korea
All travel within North Korea must be conducted through an official state-sanctioned tour operator. For a luxury experience, you will be provided with a private, air-conditioned vehicle (often a modern Mercedes or a high-end van) and at least two guides and a driver. While domestic flights are rare and often unreliable, they can occasionally be chartered between Pyongyang and Wonsan or Mt. Paektu. Intercity trains are available but are generally slower than private car transfers.
